INTRODUCTION
The
Kahuzi-Biega National Park (KBNP) is among the seven parks of the Democratic
Republic of Congo (Wabika et al. 2010). The Kahuzi-Biega National Park, founded in 1970, is situated in the
Eastern Part of the Republic Democratic of Congo from the Congo basin at
Itebero/Utu to the western crest of the Central African Rift northwest of
Bukavu between 1°36'- 2°37' southern latitude and 27°33'-28°46' eastern
longitude. It comprises, after an extension in 1975, about 600 000 ha and
includes montane forest and a large rainforest area. Because of the
geographical position and diverse relief a species rich flora and fauna
developed and The
PNKB offers a home for many Bryophytes. Research on
vegetation in general was either done punctually or during revisions or
monographs of different plant taxa. (Fischer, 1993).
Talking about bryophytes in particular, it is the French botanist Humber who
was the first to collect on Mt. Kahuzi and Biega in 1929. Jean-Jacques Symoens
collected in Rwanda and Zaire (DRC) from 1955 to 1958. He visited Nyungwe
forest as well as Tshibati and Lwiro, today part of the KBNP, his
hepaticological results was published by Vanden Berghen (1960, 1961& 1965).
In 1971 J.L.
Sloove made extensive collections on Mt. Kahuzi, Mt. Biega and around the
station Irangi. The Hepaticae were published by Vanden Berghen (1977) and the
mosses by DeSloover (1973, 1975a-d, 1976 a & b,
1979, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1987) in the course of some revisions for whole the
African continent. In 1991, the Bryoptrop-Expedition investigated the
bryophytes along an altitudinal gradient from 850m to 4500m in the Kahuzi-Biega
national Park, the Nyungwe forest and the Mt. Karisimbi, the results of this
are published in Tropical bryology (Bischler, H.1993; Fischer, E. 1993a-d; Grolle, L. 1993; Kis, G., 1996; Yamada, K. 1993; Kürschner, H, 1995,Hasegawa, J. 1993, Perold, S.M., 1993, Pόcs, T. 1993, 1994a &
b, Tixier, P. 1995, Vána, J. 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1997; Frahm, J.P., 1994 a &
b;
Frey, W. Kürschner, H. & Ulrike,
H., 1995; Kürschner, H. & Ulrike, H., 1995 ). In 2010, a taxonomic study of bryophytes of Kahuzi-Biega National Park
was done by Wabika et al. (2010). A part of that, other publications of Bryophytes
of the whole Democratic Republic of Congo have already been done: Fischer
(1993b).All these literatures were used in order to produce this primary
Checklist of hepaticae and anthocerotae of Kahuzi-Biega National Park.
This checklist is a
primary one because a major part of the large rainforest of Kahuzi-Biega
National Park was not explored yet by bryologist. A complete checklist of
Kahuzi-Biega National Park will be provided when we will finish to collect and
to identify all material of Liverworts
and Hornworts that we have started and still collect in different areas of the
large rainforest of the Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Itebero, Nzovu, Lulingu and
if possible Kasese) .
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Study area
The Kahuzi-Biega
National Park is located at the eastern part of DRC. It stretches on three
provinces: South- Kivu (Kalehe, Walungu, and Shabunda), North-Kivu (Walikale)
and Maniema (Punia). It is limited on West by river Ezeze (27°33’E), on East
(Lemera): 28°46’E, on South by river Lubimbe (2°37’S) and on North by Matebo
mountain (1°36’S) (ICCN, 2000). It comprises, after
an extension in 1975, about 6,000 km2 and includes montane
forest and a large rainforest area. Because of the geographical position and diverse
relief a species rich flora and fauna developed. The Kahuzi-Biega
National Park is geographically situated between 1°27’ of latitude South and
27°33’-28°46’ of Longitude East. Fischer (1993). A more detailed mapping of Kahuzi-Biega distinguishing 12 vegetation types
was done by Marius in 1976, mainly based on aerial photos (Fischer, 1993).
In general, the high
altitude rain forest stretches from 1600m to 2700m but in the Kahuzi-Biega
National Park, it is situated above 2300m and characterized by a relatively
lower height of trees than in the vegetation of lower altitudes. Moreover, the
vegetation tends to decrease with increasing altitude. The shrub layer is well
represented and epiphytes are abundant. With increasing altitude lichens become
more frequent (species of Usnea are
the most widely distributed), with mosses, ferns and orchids (Steinhauer et
al., 1995). Six different primary vegetation types are distinguished, each one
accompanied by its typical secondary form (Steinhauer et al., 1995):the mountain rain forest and its
secondary vegetation: 900m to 2300m, the high altitude rain forest and its
secondary vegetation: 1600m to above of 2700m, the swamp forest: developed in
all places where the plants’ reproductive cycles take place on soaking wet
soils or where the soil has at least a layer of water on its surface during the
dry season, the bamboo (Sinarundinaria
alpina)forest and its secondary
vegetation: between 2300m and 2600m, the subalpine heather and páramo (giant Senecio + Lobelia vegetation) : above 2600m trees can no longer grow, the
swamp and peat bog: swamp biotopes can be found at different altitudes but not
above 2400m.
METHODS
AND PRESENTATION
A compilation of
different publications of liverworts and hornwort were added to our own collections
from Kahuzi-Biega National Park in order to achieve this primary of Hepaticae
of Kahuzi-Biega national Park.
As in Söderström et
al. (2012), the nomenclature follows the latest taxonomic opinions and author
abbreviations are according to the International Plants Names Index http://www.ipni.org //index.html) (http://www.ipni.org:80/ipni/authorsearchpage.do). Different papers (Söderström et al. 2010, Söderström et al.
2011, Vána et al. 2006 and Pόcs et al. 2009) were used as recent model of checklist.
The following signs are used:
