How does historical materialism reveal the all-round development of people?

Human development is a historical process. Human development is a long process from one-sided to comprehensive, from unfree to more and more free. This process is ultimately determined by the development of social productivity and social relations.

Marx summed up the development of human beings into three basic historical forms.

(1) The lack of independence and freedom and the underdevelopment of personality based on the dependence of human beings. This pattern existed in pre-capitalist society.

(2) on the basis of material dependence, with more independence, more abundant relations and more diverse forms of talent. This form exists in the historical stage of capitalist society.

(3) The form of full development characterized by the all-round development of human beings and their free personality. This pattern exists in communist society.

The overall development of human being is the highest historical pattern and the most ideal form of human development. It includes the full and comprehensive development of human labor and other activities, the highly rich and comprehensive improvement of human social relations, the full development and full satisfaction of human needs and so on. The overall development of human being contains the free development intrinsically. The founders of Marxism often equate the overall development of human beings with free development.

How to understand the internal basis and standards of social progress?

The concept of social progress is the general generalization of social progress and rising trend. Its basic meaning is as follows: First, from the perspective of practice process, social progress refers to the continuous increase or accumulation of positive achievements made by human beings in the process of understanding and remaking the world. Second, from the perspective of changes in the social field, social progress refers to the evolution of social form from a lower level to a higher level, as well as the evolution and transformation of social material, political and spiritual life. Social progress is the inevitable trend of social development and the development and expression of the essence of social life.

The internal basis of social progress is as follows: firstly, social practice is the foundation of social progress. Secondly, the basic contradiction of society is the basic motive force of social progress. Thirdly, the masses are the promoters or implementers of social progress.

Social progress has its own objective criteria. First, social productive forces are the fundamental or highest standard for social progress. Second, production relations standards. Third, political civilization and spiritual civilization.

In a word, productivity is the fundamental criterion for social progress, not the only one. There are specific criteria for social progress at every level, field or aspect. In the comprehensive evaluation or measurement of social progress, we should combine the fundamental criteria with the specific criteria.
