How to understand Tan Sitong's concept of "using the Tao" and its significance?

Tan Sitong inherited Wang Fuzhi's idea of "the only thing in the world" and the idea of maximizing Tao in maximizing Tao. Tan Sitong further put forward: since it is the body and the way to use, the way according to the device, then the device saved the way to save, the device will change the way. One cannot abandon the Tao because one cannot abandon the Tao, but one can change the Tao by changing the Tao. Obviously, Tan Sitong's view on the use of organ, body and Tao directly served his thought of reform and reform.

Starting from the unification of the Tao instrument, Tan Si-tong rebutted the criticism that the people's mind (Tao) must be corrected before the reform of law (Tao).Although it is important to correct people's feelings, it must be in the practice of reform rather than outside it. Empty words of mind are actually hindering the change of course.

Describe Yan Fu's criticism of the theory of "Chinese body used in the west".

How to deal with the relationship between middle school and western learning is an important subject in the debate of modern body use. Zhang Zhidong advocated that "middle school is the body and western learning is the use". In a positive way, "Chinese style and western use" has the significance of accommodating western learning and acknowledging the reform, but in a fundamental way, it tries to rescue the crisis encountered by Confucianism. Zhang Zhidong's view of "the Chinese body used in the west" was sharply criticized by Yan Fu and other modern reformists.

Yan Fu first distinguishes the different thinking concepts between China and the West from the perspective of history. He pointed out that the biggest difference between China and the West lies in the fact that the Chinese "love the past while ignore the present", while the Westerners "strive for the present to overcome the past". Therefore, the Chinese believe in the historical cycle, while the Westerners believe in the historical evolution, which inevitably leads to the prosperity of the West and the backwardness of China.

In terms of political ethics, China attaches great importance to the three cardinal principles, namely, kinship and respect for the Lord, while the West attaches great importance to equality and honor the virtuous and the people. The advantages and disadvantages of both sides are very obvious.

As for the theory of "the Chinese body used in the west" itself, Yan Fu thinks it is completely unreasonable. Because the body with a source, indivisible, there is no cattle with the body, there is no body with the west. Therefore, we can only delude ourselves if we try to avoid the overthrowing of the great powers by piecing together the Chinese and western systems. Only by fundamentally reforming the old school in China can we truly save China from decline and decline.
