Briefly explain the significance of Parmenides' distinction between "the road of opinion" and "the road of truth".

Greek philosopher Parmenides' philosophical thought constituted an important turning point of early Greek philosophy. Parmenides put forward two approaches of research: one is "existence exists, it is impossible not to exist"; The other is "existence or non-existence, non-existence exists". Obviously, the first is the way of certainty, because it walks with the truth; the second is impossible at all, because Non-Being, that is, what is and is not, cannot be spoken of or thought of, and Being alone is the object of being spoken and thought of. The distinction between "the path of truth" and "the path of opinion" reflects Parmenides' critical attitude towards natural philosophy. Its purpose is to direct people's eyes from the numerous and disorderly phenomena to the permanent and single essence, because only the permanent and unchangeable things are the objects of truth cognition.

Parmenides' distinction between "the path of opinion" and "the path of truth" is the embryonic form of the distinction between "phenomenon" and "essence" in Western philosophy. Unlike cosmology, which seeks to find a primordium that is temporally prior, Parmenides is asking for a primordium that is logically prior.

Briefly describe Democritus's atomism.

The atomism of ancient Greek philosopher Democritus is the highest achievement of early Greek natural philosophy. He believed that the origin of everything in the universe was atoms and void, or existence and non-existence. By "atom" we mean "indivisible thing". In addition to being indivisible, the primal atom possesses the following basic properties: a solid interior without void; An infinite number; "Not perceived by the senses"; Distinguished from each other by shape, order, and position. The so-called "void," though empty and thin, is also true and one of the original, for it is only in the void that different atoms can move and form all things. Democritus's atomism is the reference and transcendence of the previous thought, one and many, existence and non-existence, origin and things and other issues in this formation of a new solution. Democritus' atomism embodies the highest achievement of early Greek philosophy and also marks the transformation from the naive dialectical view of nature to the mechanical view of nature.
