Traumatic Occurrences as a Trajectory for Structural and Functional Brain Disorders

Abstract
This
article reviews studies on trauma and its effect on the structural and
functional capabilities of the human brain. The studies demonstrate that trauma
is an experience that can transform a child's world into a terror-filled,
confusing miasma that so dramatically alters the child's trajectory into and
throughout adult life. It is the brain that mediates all emotional, cognitive,
behavioral, social, and physiological functioning as such it can internalize
traumatic experiences. Memories associated with trauma are implicit,
pre-verbal and cannot be recalled, but can be triggered by stimuli from the in vivo
environment. Understanding
the organization, function, and development of the human brain, and
brain-mediated responses to threat, provides the keys to understanding the
traumatized child. Multidisciplinary research efforts and Community
education programs are recommended to address this problem.
